Day 1 - Here come the volunteers, up go the houses

It was an early start to a good day.
The volunteers met at Twin Lakes Pavilion and after a hardy breakfast (provided by the Salvation Army) and a quick devotional, the teams were bussed to their work sites. Meeting up with their team leaders, the volunteers quickly went to work and within a few hours the first walls of the ten houses went up. By lunch, many of the houses had finished up the framing and had moved onto putting the sheeting onto the walls and constructing part of the roofs.

After another hardy meal provided by the Salvation Army, the work continued with more sheeting and such. All the volunteers pushed through and worked hard to put up the homes. Many walls were built, but many more friendships were made.

See y'all tomorrow for more hard work.

Welcome Volunteers!

Last night at Lagniappe Presbyterian Church, all the volunteers for the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project came together to meet each other and learn about what they would be doing for the next week. Excitement filled the air as the volunteers learned about the recovery efforts of Habitat for Humanity and got a special message from former president Jimmy Carter. The volunteers went to bed early knowing that the next day they had a full day's worth of work ahead of them.

The volunteers gather outside of
Lagniappe for a dinner followed by orientation.

May Blitz!

Bay Waveland Area Habitat for Humanity
is proud to be a participating site for the
2008 Carter Work Project, May 12th-16th

Every year, former president Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalyn Carter dedicate a week of their time to build homes with Habitat volunteers and partner families. This year, the Carters will join thousands of participants throughout the Gulf Coast as they build homes in hurricane ravaged communities. Bay-Waveland Area Habitat for Humanity will host approximately 300 volunteers to build ten homes in the Diamondhead community. The Carters will visit Diamondhead on Thursday morning, May 15th, to help dedicate the homes.
